The Beauty of the East#2
In order to compete with time, we arrived at Pak Tam Au by the most efficient mode of transport, taxi. We took only 15 minutes to travel from Sai Kung Town Centre to Pak Tam Au. Then, we started our walk. Along the footpath, we chit-chatted and ate without stop. Time passed so quickly and we had reached one of the oldest villages in the New Territories, Chek Keng. The place was a piece of silence, occasionally filled with holiday campers around the undulating lowland near the sea shore.
We could only find little mangrove trees around the mud flat. The area was filled with an odour of cow faeces! What a "nice" smell of the countryside! The village houses were almost empty. Such rural depopulation has created the problem of rural decay. A lot of old village houses were lacking in maintenance and ready to fall down.
